Date Ideas That Won’t Break The Bank

As you may already know, this month I have been focusing on saving money. I’ve been trying out numerous money saving hacks that my friends and readers have recommended.  We are only halfway through the month, and I have been encouraged by the difference they have made!

With Valentine’s day quickly approaching, I began to wonder how we could celebrate on a budget. Just because you are saving money, doesn’t mean that you can’t have a romantic day with your loved one. Here are some fun and cheap date ideas if you want to have a wonderful day(without breaking the bank).

Romantic Date Ideas That Won't Break The Bank

  • Board Game Night

In the Meyer home, we never get tired of playing monopoly! This is a fun and inexpensive way to spend good quality time together.

  • Pho

Vietnamese pho is very underrated in my opinion. Half of all of our dates take place at a pho restaurant. Not only is it delicious, but you can get a HUGE bowl of pho for a reasonable price.

Frugal Date Ideas

  • Make a fort

Feeling nostalgic? Bring your mattress into your living room and use sheets to create a fort. *Bonus points if anyone feels like telling a scary story.

  • Go to a farmer’s market

Going to the farmer’s market is our idea of the perfect morning.  We love going to our local market and trying all of the delicious samples. Also…I can’t guarantee this, but at every market we have gone to, there have been at least a few puppies to play with.

  • Scavenger hunt

If you have a competitive spirit, you may want to try doing a scavenger hunt. You can often find fun samples on Pinterest for free. Either complete it together, or split up and see who can finish the hunt first.

Depending on your city, there may be a scavenger hunt specific to your area. Here in Atlanta, you can buy a Clue Town booklet for Piedmont park. My husband and I completed this last year, and it is definitely worth the $15.00. You can find Clue Town books here.

  • Buy each other gag gifts at Goodwill

Where are my pranksters at? Try this: Each of you will get $10 to buy the other one something funny in the store. See who can find the ultimate gag gift.

  • Picnic

Grab a picnic basket and head to your local park. Make sure to pack delicious foods and don’t forget dessert!

  • Stargaze

The epitome of romance! Stargaze with your loved one with a cup of hot chocolate in hand.

Romantic Date Ideas That Won't Break The Bank

  • Mini golf

Mini golf and bowling are great date night options. Before you pay full price, I would recommend checking Groupon to try and find any extra savings.

  • Wine and cheese plate

Is there anything better than wine and cheese? Grab a bottle of wine and get various cheeses at your local super market. We recently found a little spot in our grocery store that has little samples of various cheese for a couple of dollars a piece. Buy a few and head home for a night in.

  • Play Kahoot!

My sisters recently introduced me to this free game, and to say I am hooked would be an understatement. Kahoot has trivia for almost any category you can think of (math, riddles, pop culture, Disney etc.) Download the app and get playing!

  • Harry Potter Marathon

Okay, okay… I suppose it could be any sort of marathon, but this girl will always choose Harry Potter. Spend the day watching movie after movie. There is something to be said for slowing down and spending quality time together cuddled up on the couch.

Do you have any frugal date ideas to add to this list?

I hope you all have a Valentine’s day full of love!

  1. Snuggling on the couch for a movie marathon sounds like the best idea on the list to me! But, I’m also going to look for a Clue Town book. Sounds fun!

    1. I agree! I am a sucker for a good movie night:) I really recommend Clue Town. We had so much fun when we did it!

  2. I loved each of these ideas, but the Harry Potter was my favorite!!!!! I’m such a sucker for Harry Potter!!!!!

  3. So fun. Brings me back to a time when we actually went on dates without children. I love the pho date idea. I’m going to see if I can get a babysitter! Happy Valentine’s Day!

  4. Thanks for sharing your frugal tips! A million dollar gift may not bring as much love & happiness, as sincere time spent together!!

  5. There is always a way to find fun things to do that don’t cost much money. Where couples run into trouble is when they base the quality of the time together on the number of dollars spent. Nothing could be further from the truth, but it’s surprising how many people feel this way.

  6. My husband and I used to play Connect 4 and Battleship 🙂 We really need to get back to doing simple stuff like that.

  7. I love these ideas, out of all these ideas I would do the farmers market or stargaze! Very romantic and better than spending a fortune on a expensive dinner.

  8. These sound like genuinely fun ideas, not just things you do as a last resort to save money! So excited to try some!

  9. These are all fantastic, romantic, adorable and fun! My hubby and I indulge in tons of these. We also enjoy playing the Lego Video games together (the older ones are pretty inexpensive and fun for a dorky game night).

I’ve never heard of Kahoot, but I’ll be looking into it! Thanks for sharing ♡

  10. What are fun great ideas for a date! I love the goodwill one, and my favorite is a pho restaurant, we just tried it for the first time and it’s awesome soup!
